Tally

If I could count
then I would number
also all the days apart
for they amount
to more than
those we shared –
to start again –
to make the
rendered whole
chart larger in the
living that we dared.
I should not count
now you have gone,
and bent the smaller
token of the tally
greater in my heart.
Tomorrow’s song
was playing then
in joyful minds;
but metered rules
have broken.
Weakened now the strong
to glancing back fall prey,
yet smiles in the history
of days to come I seek
(though they have gone)
and if I could
I’d count them.
